ABOUT

Kleaf, a wood fairy dealing with the pain of lost friends, finds an unexpected spark when Flumette—a flame spirit—pops up. But just when things seem to brighten, a twist of fate nearly puts out that spark, only for Flumette to transform into a water spirit. It’s a simple tale of loss, change, and the surprising magic of hope. Here, I celebrate how even the smallest flickers of connection can light up our darkest moments. Enjoy the journey.

THE CREATIVE JOURNEY

The idea for Kleaf and Flumette emerged spontaneously, and with my friend Antoine Claustres, we dove headfirst into our final project for Intro to 2D Animation. Our roles blurred as we collaborated closely—while I steered the project as director, writer, and animator (handling the animatic in After Effects and tweaking animations in Procreate Dreams), Antoine’s imaginative touch brought the characters and frames to life. We consulted one another at every step, merging our strengths to create a tale that’s as heartfelt as it is visually playful.

We embraced a style that’s intentionally simple, dreamy, and even a bit childish—eschewing dialogue in favor of cute, guttural sounds that evoke the magic of old-school game characters.

GOAL & VISION

At its core, Kleaf and Flumette is about finding light amid darkness using the power of simplicity. With a runtime of just 1:30, we aimed to evoke deep emotion and a touch of surprise through a minimalistic narrative—a small, hopeful reminder that even the briefest connection can spark new beginnings. As Pixar kids at heart, we believe that magic often lies in the simplest things, and this short is our celebration of that very spirit.

THE CHARACTERS

CHARACTERS

Flumette is a delicate flame spirit inspired by the Lumas from Mario Galaxy. With a radiant, flickering form in hues of orange and gold, she exudes warmth and playful energy. Though ephemeral, her glowing presence captures the magic of a campfire—bright, fleeting, and full of transformative wonder.

Kleaf is a small wood fairy brimming with gentle curiosity, inspired by the Koroks from the Zelda universe. With a leaf-like head and a soft, rounded form, he exudes a childlike warmth reminiscent of whimsical game characters. Though he appears shy, his bright eyes and playful demeanor reveal a hopeful spirit, ready to share a spark of magic with anyone he meets.

TOOLS & TECHNIQUE

We decided to use Procreate on the iPad Pro for its organic, intuitive feel.
I also ventured into Illustrator to generate vector trees, trunks, and bushes—assets that would seamlessly integrate into our After Effects animatic.

When Procreate Dreams launched at the end of November 2023, we jumped on board with our iPad Pro M2. Despite limited tutorials, we explored its features, created custom content, and even solved on-the-fly challenges (like crafting a simple rain effect etc.)

I also recorded my voice for some of Kleaf's interactions!

Every step was a joint effort. Though our roles sometimes overlapped, our constant consultation and shared problem-solving fueled the creative process.
